Approach & Philosophy

MSF, WoW, & "Slow Learning"

About MSF and the WoW Team's approach to learning.

About MSF

MSF Flag in Madagascar

For over 50 years, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders has provided independent, impartial medical humanitarian assistance to those who need it most. Operating in more than 70 countries, MSF cares for people affected by armed conflict, disease outbreaks, natural and human-made disasters, and systemic exclusion from healthcare.

When disaster strikes, MSF teams—comprising doctors, nurses, logisticians, and administrators—are often the first on the scene, sometimes arriving within minutes. In 2024, MSF employed over 60,000 staff, with nearly 90% of them working directly at project sites. To sustain this global impact, MSF is committed to building high-functioning teams and increasing the capacity of managers and supervisors to ensure teams are empowered to respond effectively to the world's most urgent crises.

About WoW Programs

WoW Learning Pathway

Ways of Working (WoW) programs are highly contextualized management trainings that reflect MSF's working environments, reinforce MSF's approach to management, and promote the practice of building cultures of learning in our teams. Programs are delivered in virtual and in-person learning environments and engage over 600 learners globally each year.

WoW programs apply adult learning and universal design principles and are designed to "slow learning down". The learning experience encourages high engagement, peer-to-peer learning, individual and group application and reflection, and fosters knowledge transfer and long-term behavior change.

The Why Behind the WoW

WoW programs were originally developed in 2008 as MSF's Field Management Training (FMT) and delivered to approximately 100 participants in 5–10 different project sites every year. In 2019, after intensive strategic discussions at all levels, MSF formalized their management approach and learning philosophy. The FMT was then re-conceptualized as our "ways of working" to align with and reinforce these strategic directions.
